Football falls to Boise St. 26-10 in finale

The Broncos had the football for over 42 minutes and tallied 468 yards en route to a 26-10 win over Central.

“The defense was on the field too long, and that’s what the game boiled down to,” said Head Coach Mike DeBord.

Brock Forsey had a career day for the Broncos.

The Boise State running back rushed for a career-high 212 yards on 32 carries. It was the third best rushing performance in BSU history.

“We allowed to many rushing yards,” DeBord said.

Central had a 10-7 lead after a two yard run by Terrence Jackson at 7:43 in the second quarter.

The scoring drive started after Derrick Holoman recovered a fumbled punt at the Boise State 44 yard line.

Jackson finished with 80 yards on 25 carries, ending his seven game streak of more than 100 yards rushing. Central’s offense only totaled 147 yards.

“Boise State’s defense did a great job of stopping our running game,” DeBord said. “Their blitz caused us problems and our backs could not cut up the field.”

Nick Calaycay kicked two second half field goals to give the Broncos a 13-10 lead, en route to 16 unanswered points.

Calaycay’s first field goal capped a 17-play 56-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes to end the first half.

B.J. Rhode connected with Jay Swillie for a 5-yard touchdown pass at 12:56 in the fourth quarter, capping a five-play 34-yard drive to give Boise State a 19-10 lead.

Ron Bartell stopped the previous Boise State drive after he recovered a fumble in the endzone.

But, quarterback Derek Gorney threw an interception at 8:05 in the third quarter on first down.

The next two CMU possession resulted in a Gorney’s second interception and then a fumble by Jackson.

DeBord said he never considered benching Gorney after two straight interceptions.

“It was best for our team to keep him in,” DeBord said.

Gorney finished 10 of 25 for 73 yards.

Rhode, the Bronco quarterback made his first career start and finished 13 of 27 for 191 yards and one touchdown.

He became the starter Friday after Boise State starting quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie was suspended for violating team rules.

Forsey capped the scoring with a three-yard touchdown run with 1:49 remaining, capping a nine-play 64-yard drive.

Boise State had the games first possession and took it took the Chippewas 12 yard line before Jovan Clarke intercepted the ball and returned it 60 yards.

Clarke finished with a career-high 21 tackles, including three for losses totaling 10 yards.

James King blocked his seventh punt of the year late in the third quarter and later blocked an extra point in the fourth quarter. He finished with 11 tackles.
