Vickers uncertain for BSU

Greg Burghardt

Sophomore quarterback Derrick Vickers is questionable for Saturday’s game with a bruised shin that is swelling.

“It originally happened against Marshall, but it has gotten worse,” Vickers said.

The injury knocked Vickers out of the final two possessions in Saturday’s 34-24 loss to Northern Illinois.

For precautionary measures Vickers, who has started the last 13 games for CMU, is currently on crutches and is resting. He hasn’t practiced yet this week.

If Vickers can’t go junior, Derek Gorney will start his first career game as a Chippewa.

“He’ll do a good job for us,” Vickers said. “He prepares himself well for games.”

Gorney has completed 12-of-23 passes for 167 yards and two touchdown this season. Gorney through an interception against NIU.

“We won’t have to change the offense at all,” said CMU Head Coach Mike DeBord. “He has done an unbelievable job for us this season. He led us to a touchdown against Marshall and led us 98 yards down field against NIU.”

Backing up Gorney if Vickers can’t play will be redshirt freshmen Grant Arnoldink and Jeff Perry.

Vickers said if he is out for BSU, he should be back for Eastern at home in two weeks.
