Police tighten security at homecoming game, students dont object

Fans attending the Homecoming game between CMU and Ohio University on Saturday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium will have to go through comprehensive security.

The athletics department made the stadium a “no-fly zone,” and will not be allowing coolers, backpacks or similar containers within the complex. Also, purses may be subject to search.

“I don’t think it is necessary, but it is fine if they think it will make us safer,” said Ashley Foucault, Bay City junior.

Tighter security measures at sporting events may be an inconvenience, but they are not uncommon.

“We worked with campus security, and the measures we have taken are consistent with those of Michigan State University and the University of Michigan,” said Athletics Director Herb Deromedi.

The heightened security comes in light of the recent terrorist attacks.

“We certainly want all those in attendance to feel confident that all precautions that are necessary, are being taken care of,” he said.

Stricter security will be enforced at all gates throughout the stadium.

“(It is necessary) for the safety of all who attend the games,” said Tiffanie Holloway, Adrian freshman.
