Women's hoops team adds transfer
The Chippewa women's basketball team will have a new player on their team starting the 2001-02 season.
Elizabeth Widman comes to CMU this year from American University in Washington D.C., but must sit out the upcoming season due to NCAA transfer requirements.
Originally from Solleftea, Sweden, Widman appeared in 23 games averaging six minutes of playing time last season for American.
CMU women's basketball head coach, Fran Voll, said the 6'-1" Widman is a welcome addition to the team and the school.
"She (Widman) is an outstanding young woman with a lot of talent," Voll said.
"She is a strong post player and will help strengthen our frontcourt. In addition, she is an exceptional student and great person."
Widman spent most of her high school career in Sweden, where she earned All-Area First Team, All-Region First Team and All-Sweden Top Twenty honors.
Widman was also recruited for the Swedish Junior National Team.
The team was ranked in the top-20 in Europe and she was the team's high scorer against Denmark during the final game of the 1996 Polar Cup.
Widman's senior year of high school was spent as an exchange student at Marion.
While at Marion, Widman averaged 14.9 points per game in route to capturing All-Conference, All-Area (Cadillac) and Class D All-State honors.
Widman also set Marion High School records for most blocked shots in a game and for a season.
She was also named one of Michigan's Top-30 girls basketball players by the Detroit Free Press in 1997.
The Chippewas begin the 2000-01 season with an exhibition game Nov. 4 at Rose Arena against the College All-Stars.
