CMU's Simon grabs graduate award
CMU athletics marketing graduate assistant Jeff Simon recently was named a recipient of a Postgraduate Scholarship Award from the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA).
Simon's award was in the form of a $1,000 grant, which was placed in the CMU general athletics fund in his name.
Simon was one of five students nationally selected.
Currently enrolled in the sport administration graduate program, Simon was excited about the award.
"It (award) feels really good," Simon said.
"I worked hard to get my job here and it was nice to see the hard work pay off."
Before receiving the award, Simon said he had to send a resume' packet to NACMA for its consideration.
To earn the award, students were required to carry a 3.0 minimum grade point average, be a full-time senior or graduate student and be planning a career in sports marketing.
Simon, who is originally from Grand Ledge, earned his bachelors degree in 1999 with a major in business administration and a minor in sports studies.
Simon graduated with a 3.94 grade point average as an undergraduate, was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and was named Beta Gamma Sigma, the highest academic honor for a business student at Central.
Gary Friedman, associate athletics director, said having Simon working in the athletics department has been valuable.
"He (Simon) is a very personable young man," Friedman said.
"He has a real interest in contributing to the overall success of the athletics program and his skills and strengths have been an asset. It's a great honor for him to receive this award and he's definitely earned it."
Simon also recognized Friedman for his role.
"Gary has supported me and has taught me things in my assistantship that are invaluable. The experience has been great," Simon said.
Simon's duties in the athletics marketing department include selling sponsorships, implementing the marketing plans for all sports, executing game-day promotions and developing and organizing schedules for radio and newspaper advertising.
