CMU men's track, CC teams ink eight recruits
The CMU men's cross country and track teams have announced the signings of eight recruits to national letters-of-intent and the transfer of one athlete.
Hoping to repeat as Mid-American Conference champion in cross country and improve the track team's third place finish at the MAC outdoor championships, the Chippewas added much needed depth to both teams.
"This is our best distance recruiting class in school history," Cross Country Head Coach Craig Fuller said in a press release. "With the core of the MAC championship team returning, the future certainly looks bright."
The eight recruits joining the Chippewas are Jacob Crowe, Jake Flynn, Kevin Sule, Tristen Perlberg, Jacques Henning, Adam Lyon, Steve Wolf and Derold Sligh.
Also joining the team is Matt Zissler, who is transferring from Northwood University.
Crowe, from Grand Ledge, took 10th place in the 1999 Class A cross country championships and won the 600 meters at the 2000 state indoor championships.
He also owns the fifth fastest time in state history in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.05.
Crowe also garnered fourth place in the national Nike indoor meet in the 800 meters and also posted personal bests in the 2000 outdoor season in the 800 meters (1:55.06) and the 1,600 meters (4:17.4).
Flynn, a Benzonia native, has captured three Class C cross country crowns and was a member of the 1998 Foot Locker cross country All-Midwest team.
He also garnered the 1999 Class C two-mile championship and was the 2000 Division III runner-up in the mile with a time of 4:14.8.
Sule, from Hemlock, was named to the 2000 Midwest Michigan All-Star team, winning the Division III state title in the 800 meters (1:54.4) and the 1,600 meters (4:12.6).
Sule was also the 800 meter Class C champion and a member of the cross country Mideast team in 1999.
Perlberg, from Bay City, won the Division II state title in the 3,200 meters (9:18.89) and was a member of the 1999 cross country Mideast team.
He also took 21st at the Foot Locker Midwest cross country meet.
Henning, from Harbor Springs, won the Class C championship in the 1,600 meters (4:18.4) in 1999.
At Central, Henning will be competing in cross country for the first time because his high school did not sponsor the sport.
Lyon, from Mesick, is a two-time state champion in the 110 meter high hurdles.
Wolf, from Sterling Heights, garnered the Division I state championship in the long jump.
He has personal bests of 22'-10 3/4" in the long jump and 6'-11" in the high jump.
Sligh, from Saginaw, won the Division I state championship in the 400 meters (48.65) and captured second place in the long jump (22'-9").
While at Northwood, Zissler took second place at the 2000 Division II NCAA outdoor national championships in the 800 meters (1:49.46) and fourth place at the 1999 Division NCAA indoor finals in the 800 meters (1:51.20).
