Women's basketball team splits at tourney
The CMU women's basketball team topped the Niagra Purple Eagles 77-58 on Friday, then fell 62-58 to the Stony Brook Seawolves in the championship game of the Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson University.
In the first game Vershaun Jones led the Chips with 20 points and also turned in 11 rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal in the win.
Molli Munz added 11 on 3-5 shooting from three point land and Mandy Winner chipped in 12 off the bench for Central. Alicia Rozak grabbed 12 boards from her guard spot.
The Chippewa defense was also quite strong as the team held the Purple Eagles to 32 percent shooting including 25 percent from the field in the first half en route to a 36-23 lead at the break.
In the championship game against Stony Brook, the defense was even stronger, holding the Seawolves to 28 percent shooting from the field but not strong enough to help CMU overcome its own woes from the free throw line where the team made just 8 of 14 for 57 percent.
Central couldn't hold guard Julie Szabo down as the Seawolve went off for 32 points including 12-13 from the charity stripe and 4-11 from behind the arc.
Senior pivot Shelly Woods was the top scorer for CMU as she poured in 17 points and also picked up five boards for the game.
Woods didn't get much help though as no other Chippewa had more than eight points.
Central now gets a week off of game action before returning to Rose Arena on Dec. 19, when it hosts the Michigan Wolverines in a 2 p.m. game.
