Pulitzer Prize winner coming to CMU Wednesday
Viet Thanh Nguyen received a Pulitzer Prize in 2016 for his spy novel, "The Sympathizer"
Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen will be speaking at Central Michigan University for the CMU Speaker Series.
The event will take place from 8-10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in Plachta Auditorium. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the event.
Nguyen will be discussing his book; The Sympathizer, a best-selling novel and recipient of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The Sympathizer is a historical spy novel told in the first-person. The narrator of the book is a Communist spy living in America.
“The primary task of the CMU Speaker Series is to bring in relevant Speakers,” Director of University Events, Misheaila Neil said.
Nguyen and his family took refuge in the United States during the Vietnam War in 1975. He was inspired to write about the war from a Vietnamese perspective, globally reimagining what we thought we knew about the conflict, according to his agency, The Tuesday Agency.
Nguyen will speak from 8-9:30 p.m. After his speech students will have the opportunity to ask him questions.
“It is a great opportunity for CMU students to ask questions about real and relevant topics,” Neil said. “He is giving us a lot of time and wants to have conversation with the students... University Events wants to bring in speakers who want to work with college students.”
After the question and answer session there will be a book signing and copies of The Sympathizer for sale. The event is free and open to the public.
