Greek Life raises more than $70,000 for philanthropies during the Fall 2017 semester
A total of $70,549.38 was raised for multiple philanthropies by fraternity and sorority chapters at Central Michigan University during the Fall 2017 semester.
Each chapter has a specific philanthropy they partner with and conduct events to raise money — such as dinners and competitive events.
Sigma Chi raised the most money of all the fraternities on campus for their philanthropy, the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The fraternity contributed a total of $23,000. Out of all the sororities on campus, Phi Sigma Sigma raised the most with $8,300 donated towards the Kids in Need Foundation.
The total number of service hours completed for both fraternities and sororities on campus was 21,992.
There are 1,602 total members in Greek Life at CMU.
Delta Phi Epsilon had the most service hours out of all chapters with 5,975.
"I know exactly what the fraternity and sorority life community can do when raising money in regards to Greek Week, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the 29 organizations raised more than $70,000," said Fraternity and Sorority Life Assistant Director Jordan Borchert in a Feb. 16 press release. "It is not only about the dollars raised, but also the awareness they give and education they provide for a multitude of causes."
Alongside the service and philanthropy demonstrated by members of Greek Life, academics remained a priority throughout the fall. The average GPA for all of Greek Life was 3.05 for the 2017-18 Fall semester.
Last year, Greek Week raised more than $83,000. The money was donated to the Kristy Malter Memorial Fund and the Isabella County Child Advocacy Center. This year, Greek Week will begin March 26 and will conclude with the Mock Rock competition on April 5.
The 2018 Greek Week will benefit the Women's Aid Shelter and Special Days Camps.
