The Year in Sports: A look back at the biggest moments in CMU sports for 2016

There were several surprises in 2016 for Central Michigan sports teams. 

The football team knocked off a ranked opponent for the first time in two decades, the women's basketball team came within one point of winning a Mid-American Conference Championship and Alexis Pelafas was among the nations leading goal scorers. Take a look at some of the most memorable moments from 2015. 

Football

April 30: Kavon Frazier gets drafted 

Former CMU football player Kavon Frazier was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Sept.10: Chippewas shock Oklahoma State

The football team defeated No. 22 Oklahoma State 30-27 thanks to a Hail Mary pass from senior quarterback Cooper Rush to senior receiver Jesse Kroll, who then lateraled the ball to junior receiver Corey Willis, who raced to the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. The win was CMU’s first over a ranked team since 1991. 

Oct. 9: National Anthem protest 

Before CMU’s game against Ball State, four Central Michigan football players raised their fists during the National Anthem to protest social injustice in America.

Nov. 15: Football becomes bowl eligible 

The after losing three-consecutive games, the football bounced back with a 27-20 victory against Ohio. The win gave CMU a 6-5 record and made the team bowl eligible.

Dec. 4: Miami Beach Bowl invites CMU

After finishing the season 6-6, the MAC announced the football had been selected to play in the 2016 Miami Beach Bowl against Tulsa in Miami, Florida. It’s the third year the Chippewas will be playing in a bowl game. 

Dec. 19: Tulsa dismantles Chippewas

CMU fell to Tulsa 55-10 in the Miami Beach Bowl. The Chippewas finished the season 6-7 overall and it was the last game for Rush at quarterback. 

Men's basketball 

Feb. 5: John Simons shoots his way into record books 

Then-senior John Simons shot 3-for-8 from the 3-point line as he became CMU men’s basketball’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made with 236 on this date. He finished his career with 256 3-pointers made.

March 10: CMU upset in first round of MAC Tournament 

With 13 seconds remaining in the game, Bowling Green hit a 3-point shot to give the Falcons a 60-59 lead over CMU. After a turnover, BGSU hit two free throws to win 62-59.

March 16: UT Martin bounces CMU from CIT 

After losing in the first round of the MAC Tournament, the men's basketball team was knocked out of the College Invitational Tournament, ending the careers of Chris Fowler and John Simons. 

Nov. 11: Keene debuts 

After sitting out last season due to transfer rules, junior guard Marcus Keene made his debut for the men's basketball team scoring a team-high 32 points in a 117-53 win against Indian University Kokomo. 

Dec. 6: CMU backcourt shines 

Keene and Braylon Rayson combined for 70 points as the men's basketball team defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay 107-97. Keene scored a career-high 40 points and Rayson tied his career high of 30. 

Dec. 21: Keene records another career-high

After breaking his career high in points earlier in the month, Keene set a new career best with 44 points to lead CMU to a 106-103 win against Montana State. 

Women's basketball 


Jan. 9: Tinara Moore breaks out 

Then-sophomore forward Tinara Moore became the second college women’s basketball to go 16-for-16 from the field as she scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed 20 rebounds as CMU defeated Akron 97-77.

Jan. 31: CMU gives back 

Jasmine Harris and the CMU women’s basketball team gave 9,591 bottles of water to the residents of Flint affected by the Flint Water Crisis.

March 5: CMU clinches MAC West Title

Women’s basketball topped Eastern Michigan 78-70 to clinch the MAC West title for the second time in three seasons. It was the team’s fifth 20-win season in the past six seasons.  

March 8: Guevara named Coach of the Year

Head Coach Sue Guevara was awarded MAC Coach of the Year as her team finished the regular season 20-9 overall, and 14-4 in the MAC. 

March 11: CMU earns title shot

The Chippewas overcame a 13-point deficit in the first half to defeat Eastern Michigan and earn a spot in the MAC Championship game for the second time in three years. 

March 12: Chippewas fall short of MAC Title 

Buffalo scored at the buzzer to defeat the women's basketball team in overtime in the MAC Tournament Championship game. 

Dec. 9: Presley Hudson leads CMU to victory 

Hudson knocked down a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. Hudson then scored the game-winning layup as time expired to give the women's basketball team a 73-71 win over St. Joseph's. 

Baseball

May 8: Chippewas outlast Ohio in 13 innings 

CMU defeated Ohio 13-11 in 13 innings to take two of three games in its final regular season road trip. 


May 11: CMU tops Michigan

The baseball team topped No. 21 Michigan 8-7, earning its first win against the Wolverines since 2011. The Chippewas jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held off Michigan late for the victory.

May 14: Walk-off triple seals win for Chippewas

After one-and-a-half extra innings of scoreless baseball, junior first basemen Alex Borglin hit a walk-off triple to the right field fence that sent freshman pinch runner Ty Rollin across the plate as CMU defeated Miami (Ohio) 4-3

June 12: Three Chippewas taken in MLB Draft

Nick Deeg, Zack McKinstry and Sean Renzi were selected during the Major League Baseball draft. Deeg was selected by the San Fransico Giants in the 30th round, the Chicago White Sox selected Renzi in the 32 round and McKinstry was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 33rd round. 

Softball

Feb 14: Softball claims Mercer Invite Title 

The Chippewas won four straight games including a 4-3 win against Pittsburgh to win the Mercer Invitational Tournament Championship. Allison Curtis and Katelyn Rentschler each hit home runs for CMU.

March: CMU sweeps in home opener

Rachel Vieira hit a home run in the first game of the opener and CarolAnn Sexauer hit two home runs in the nightcap as CMU swept Valparaiso. 

May 7: Chippewas clinch MAC Tournament spot 

With a series win against MAC West champion Northern Illinois, the Chippewas secured the final spot in the MAC Tournament. 

Soccer

Sept. 18: Late goal leads to historic start 

In the 58th minute of a tightly contested matchup, senior defensemen Taylor Potts scored the game-winning goal to push the soccer team past Oakland. The win was a historic one as the Chippewas improved to 8-0 for the first time in school history

Sept. 30: Pelafas scores in double OT for the victory 

Alexis Pelafas scored in double overtime to lift the soccer team past Miami (Ohio) in a rainy and windy conditions.  

Oct. 16: Pelafas makes history 

Alexis Pelafas set CMU soccer’s single season goal record with a goal in double overtime as the Chippewas knocked off Ohio. The goal moved her ahead of Allison Campbell, who set the previous record of 14 goals in 2001.

Dec. 1: Pelafas, Van de Kerkhove earn All-Region honor

Pelafas and senior midfielder Eliza Van de Kerkhove were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Great Lakes Region First Team. They were the first Chippewas ever selected to the team. 

Wrestling 

March 6: Ellingwood wins MAC Title

Jordan Ellingwood claimed Central Michigan wrestling's 105th individual conference title at the MAC Tournament in Ypsilanti. It was the program's 14th MAC title at the 184-pound weight class.

March 19: Freshman earns All-American honors

After starting the year as a backup, Justin Oliver finished the year as an All-American. Oliver defeated Boise State's Geo Martinez to finish seventh in the 149-pound weight class at the NCAA Championship. Oliver back CMU's first All-American since 2013. 

Volleyball

Jan. 28: Mike Gawlik named new volleyball coach 

Mike Gawlik was named Head Coach of the volleyball team after former coach Erik Olson voluntarily resigned in December of 2015. Gawlik had spent the previous 11 seasons with Michigan State as an assistant.

Aug. 26: Gawlik makes debut 

Gawlik made his debut as the new Head Coach of the volleyball team. The debut was spoiled by Southern Illinois, who swept the Chippewas. CMU finished the season 11-17 and missed the MAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. 

Nov. 16: Bueter earns All-MAC honors

Junior outside hitter Jordan Bueter was named the All-MAC team for her performance in 2016. She led the MAC in aces with 53 and led CMU with 367 kills and was second in digs with 288. 

Gymnastics

Jan. 8: CMU finishes first at quad meet 

The gymnastics team took first place at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational, finishing ahead of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Eau Claire and Winona State.

Jan. 31: Late charge pushes gymnastics past Ball State 

After a slow start, CMU battle back to defeat Ball State and extend its winning streak to start the season at seven matches. 

Lacrosse

Feb. 20: Lacrosse notches first-ever win

In the second game of its inaugural season, the lacrosse team defeated Gardner-Webb 16-4 to claim its first victory in program history.  

March 11: CMU wins first game at new stadium 

The lacrosse team defeated Delaware State 19-5 in the team’s first ever home game in program history. It was the first home game at the new CMU Lacrosse/Soccer Stadium, which opened in 2016. 

Cross Country

Oct. 29: Women finish 4th, Men 7th at MAC Championships

The women's cross country team took fourth place at the MAC Championships, while the men's team finished 7th. The women's team was led by sophomore Megan O'Neil and senior Kelly Schubert, who placed 10th and 11th, respectively. Junior Joseph Emmanuel took 28th to led the men's team. 


Golf

March 13: CMU golf finds new practice home

The CMU women’s golf team and the Mount Pleasant Country Club reached an agreement to build an indoor facility for the team. The team agreed to a 10-year lease where it would pay $35,000 in annual rent to the club in addition to $5,000 in utility costs and maintenance.

Track & field

April 30: Dyer breaks 3,000-meter record 

Alyssa Dyer broke CMU's 3,000-meter steeplechase record with a time of 10 minutes 21.18 seconds, breaking the previous record time set by Maddie Ribant in 2011. 

May 14: Two Chippewas claim MAC crowns

Then-senior Cole Walderzak and senior Ziemowit Dutkiewicz finished first in their respective sports at the MAC Championships. Walderzak took first place in the men's discus and Dutkiewicz finished first in the 400-meter hurdles. 

May 16: Alex Rose punches ticket to Summer Olympics

Former CMU discus thrower Alex Rose qualified for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after a throw of 65.74 meters. The Samoan-born athlete need to be ranked in the top-32 and finished ranked 24th to quality.
