DIII hockey team dominant in weekend sweep of Lake Superior State

If there’s one phrase to describe the weekend series between Central Michigan and Lake Superior State this weekend, it would be one-sided domination.

CMU's Division III hockey team routed the Lakers' DII club team this weekend, winning Saturday’s matchup 11-1 and Sunday’s 11-0.

CMU's domination started early on Saturday, scoring their first two goals came within 40 seconds of each other. The Chippewas went on to add three more goals by the time the first period had came to an end. Eight different Chippewas scored on Saturday night.

Sunday’s game showed a slow start for CMU, carrying a 1-0 lead after the first period.

The second period is where everything came unglued for LSSU. The Chippewas scored eight goals in the second period.

“I knew we had it in us,” said head coach Tyler Cataline. “Our guys are putting the puck in the back of the net. Everybody can put the puck in the net. All four lines produced (for us) this weekend.”

CMU would go on to add two more in the third period to take game two and clinch the weekend sweep.

Goaltender Trevor Whitehead earned his first career shutout on Sunday.

“It was just really nice to get a good weekend to get off the skid," Whitehead said. “It was good to get out here and get a 22-1 goal ratio this weekend.”

After Saturday’s game, Whitehead was one of multiple players signing autographs, taking pictures and talking with young fans; something rarely seen for a DIII club team.

“It means a lot," Whitehead said. “Being a student athlete you try and set a good example not only for guys on your team but your community as well. It’s nice when they want to get involved in things too.”

The DIII hockey team begins league play this weekend. Friday’s game will be at Northwood University, puck drop at 8:05. The team returns home on Saturday against Northwood. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. at the Isabella County Events Center.
