Men's basketball to host IU-Kokomo for season opener tonight
The season begins tonight for the Central Michigan men's basketball team.
The Chippewas host Indiana-Kokomo for their season opener at 7 p.m. in McGuirk Arena. The game marks the beginning of CMU's quest for a third straight Mid-American Conference West Division title.
CMU finished 17-16 last season, going 10-8 in the MAC. The Chippewas fell to No. 12-seeded Bowling Green in their first game of the MAC Tournament in Cleveland. After clinching a spot in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, CMU fell to Tennessee-Martin in its first game to end the season.
The Chippewas lost key contributors such as four-year captain Chris Fowler, fellow guards Rayshawn Simmons and Austin Stewart and forward John Simons.
CMU defeated Slippery Rock 91-74 in a preseason exhibition game on Nov. 5. Junior guard Marcus Keene, who transferred in from Youngstown State last season, poured in 32 points in his first action in a CMU uniform. Junior forward Luke Meyer added 14 points and fellow junior forward Cecil Williams scored 10 points and corralled six rebounds.
Men's basketball picked to finish last in MAC West by coaches, media
A poll released by the Mid-American Conference Friday showed the Central Michigan men's basketball team as being picked to finish sixth place out of six teams in the MAC West Division for the upcoming season.
Senior guard Braylon Rayson was held to seven points. The Texas native averaged a career-best 16.3 points per game last season and has been heralded by head coach Keno Davis as a leader for this team in his final season.
IU-Kokomo has already amassed a 2-2 record this season under head coach Jace Thompson. The Cougars have this game marked as an exhibition on their schedule. Trent Elliot led IU-Kokomo with 14.3 points per game last season.
