Trailer fire in parking lot disrupts people sleeping inside
A camper trailer in lot 63 near Kelly/Shorts Stadium caught fire early Saturday morning while two people were sleeping inside. Both were uninjured from the fire.
Mount Pleasant City Fire Chief Rick Beltinck said a man and woman were asleep inside their camper when the man heard a popping sound. A Central Michigan University security guard knocked on their door to warn them of the fire that eventually consumed their trailer and vehicle connected to it.
Beltnick said the man "saw fire around the generator area" but the cause is still under investigation. Dispatch received the call at 5:27 a.m. and the fire was put out around 20 minutes later.
"There was a lot of fire there," Beltnick said.
CMU Police Sgt. David Coffman said the man and woman are being aided by CMUPD to make temporary arrangements with their family in the area.
White Lake resident Denise Sartor was in a camper one parking space away when she was also woken up by the security guard knocking on her door. She evacuated in case the fire spread.
Sartor said she was "sleeping quite soundly" when the security guard woke her up.
Sartor is a CMU alumnus in visiting Mount Pleasant for Homecoming Weekend. She said it was a good thing it didn't happen when they were here for Western Weekend a week ago.
"We always park in that spot, and we have been tailgating for the last five years," Sartor said.
