Central Michigan will soon have representation on the biggest stage in college football.
Four new members to the College Football Playoff selection committee were announced Thursday, including CMU football coaching legend Herb Deromedi.
Deromedi, 76, will be the first selection committee member to be a representative of the Mid-American Conference in the short history of the College Football Playoff. He will be part of the 13-member committee that ranks the Top 25 football teams in the country along with deciding the top four to invite for the playoff.
"I'm humbled to have this opportunity," Deromedi told cmuchippewas.com. "Football has been a signifiant part of my life. This gives me an opportunity to be involved in its rich history and with its ongoing history. Being part of that selection process to determine this national champion is very meaningful."
Deromedi first began his coaching career here at CMU as an assistant from 1967 to 1977 under Roy Kramer. Deromedi was a member of the 1974 Division II National Championship team.
As a head coach, Deromedi led the team from 1978 to 1993 with an overall record of 110-55-10 and a conference record of 90-39-9, becoming the winningest coach in CMU and MAC history. During his head coaching tenure, his teams won three Mid-American Conference titles.
Following his coaching career, Deromedi served as Central Michigan's athletic director for 12 years from 1994 to 2006. Soon after he was inducted to the Central Michigan University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004, the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007 and the MAC Hall of Fame in 2012.
Deromedi will begin his duties as a selection committee member this fall and will have a seat for the next three seasons. Former Michigan Head Coach Lloyd Carr is also one of the new members to be added to the committee.
