Fraternities and sororities held a step show at Finch Field house on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015.

More than 500 students and alumni gathered into Finch Fieldhouse to witness the Mid Michigan Classic Step Show.

Seven National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations on Central Michigan University's campus presented a power-packed step show in hopes of winning the first place cash prize of $2,000 and champion bragging rights.

The homecoming step show has become a tradition at CMU and is a highly anticipated event, especially for the CMU's African American community.

NPHC Advisor Dwayne Jenkins knows first hand how much time and dedication it takes to create a step show.

“We’ve been planning this since early April. Between emails, meetings and constant phone calls it's been extremely hectic in planning this show," Jenkins said. “I have a huge sigh of relief that is finally over. After endless planning, its awesome to finally see the vision come into fruition.”

A committee of only five members worked endlessly to produce what ending up a show that astonished the audience.

Out of all of the nine national NPHC organizations, the only two organizations that didn’t compete in the step show was the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity. After each organization was given their allotted time to perform, the winners were finally announced.

The first place fraternity winner was Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the first place sorority winner was Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

“We were so overjoyed when our name was called and we found out that we won first place, I couldn’t even contain my excitement,” said President Delta Sigma Theta, Briana Elmore. “I’m so grateful for this. We’ve worked so hard and sacrificed so much for this show. It not only is a fulfilling moment but it has also brought my sisters and I so much closer.”

Alpha Phi Alpha chapter president Kebbi Kelley expressed the same feelings as Elmore.

“It took so much hard work and dedication that sometimes people don’t realize. We have several debates, clashing ideas as well as schedules. But I’m so grateful that we pulled out the win.” Kelley said. “We will be using this cash prize to put on more events that will benefit the student body.”

CMU's NPHC has plans for more events this semester, including another step show.

“Be on the lookout for an even bigger and better step show next year," Kelley said "This is just the beginning.”
