Homecoming 5K to raise funds for Special Olympic athletes
Special Olympics Michigan and Central Michigan University are working together for the CMU Homecoming 5k Run/Walk.
The Homecoming 5k Run/Walk will occur on Saturday, Oct. 3. Registration is from 7 a.m. to 7:40 a.m. The run will begin at 8 a.m. Event registration was $25 for those who registered before Sept. 26 and is $35 dollars for participants who register after Sept. 26.
The Homecoming 5k has been an annual tradition during CMU’s homecoming weekend for over 20 years. Kelly Berryhill, development and events coordinator for Special Olympics Michigan, said that tradition is important to strengthening the bond between CMU and SOMI.
“This gives them a chance to see what Special Olympics Michigan is about,” she said.
The purpose of the Homecoming 5K is to raise awareness and funding for nearly 21,000 Special Olympics athletes in Michigan. The donations SOMI receives helps to cover the cost of sending athletes to competitions. The goal this year is to raise $13,000.
All participants will be awarded with a shirt and a medal upon finishing the race. The participant who raises the most donations online will receive an IPad.
The race will begin at Finch Fieldhouse, go around campus, and end back at the starting line. Students can register for the Homecoming 5K at firstgiving.com.
